I choose The Street, as a 100% Libertarian, to post this observation from another thread:
The point of a two- party system is to thrash out ideological, regional, and other conflicts within the context of intra- party politics, so that the general elections are relatively uncluttered. Instead of starting a third party, the answer is to get involved with a faction within the existing parties. There have been occasions when third parties have supplanted one of the existing parties in the U.S. and U.K., as when the Republicans supplanted the Whigs, and Labour supplanted the Liberal Party, but such occurrences are rare, generally lead to the return to two major parties, and happen in potentially revolutionary times, when neither existing party makes room for the aspirations that seek outlet in the third party.
