Daring U.S. commandos swooped into Yugoslavia last night to carry out the dramatic rescue of an American pilot whose Stealth fighter went down near Belgrade during a bombing mission.

The pilot, who ejected from the doomed craft, was whisked out of the country at 9:32 p.m., New York time - about 6 hours after his F-117A Nighthawk fighter was reported missing.

The highly trained commando team - who snuck into Yugoslavia in sophisticated Blackhawk helicopters - cleared Yugoslav air space at 9:52 p.m., officials said.

"They performed in a way that should make all Americans proud," Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said.
