Re: Overthrows

Like the PC overthrew the mainframe? It seems to me that in the computer business new technology "grows around" existing technology more than displaces it. As a result, new markets develop and exist in parallel with ever-changing existing markets. Smart cellphones may well be ubiquitous by 2010 but does that mean that they will suffice by themselves? Somehow I doubt it. Businesses aren't going to run their operations on cellphones no matter how "smart" they get.

The Sony Walkman did not replace the home audio system--it simply expanded the audio market by creating a parallel market which coexisted with the more "traditional" concept of what an audio system was. The same will likely happen with the computer market. This is not a zero-sum game no matter how much McNealy and company wish it were.
