Yes, puzzling, isn't it? Here's a more specific URL:

Note that it's an unusual surname: only 132 people called Writer have died since Social Security began keeping records. (And, um, some of 'em appear to have died more than once...)
So what happened to Gregory D. Writer, Sr, who, according to Our Greg, is dead?

There must be some simple explanation, but I confess it escapes me...
Now. We remember that
At the age of 21 Mr. Writer was the founder, President and a Director of R. Writer Securities, a registered securities broker-dealer in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

R. Writer Securities was incorporated in Florida and, apparently, sold in 1989, at which time its name was changed to Austin Stone Securities:

So: who was R. Writer? If Greg was the company founder, why didn't he use his own name? Only one likely R. Writer turns up in the SS Death Index:

Not much information about R is offered; but he did at any rate apply for his SS card from Colorado. Note that he died in September 1987; R. Writer Securities was incorporated in Florida in May 1987. He could, of course, be the wrong R; "our" R may conceivably still be alive...
But what happened--or didn't happen--to Greg Sr?
