I don't think morality has much to do with anything really, other than as a tool for obfuscating the Realpolitik. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was violated almost from the date of its signing, so the United States of America is illegally occupying half of the sovereign state of los Estados Unidos de México. Sure it's immoral. So what? - it works.
