What's a bathyscaph? You know that Piccard guy that just set the world record as first to circle the planet in a balloon? Well his grandfather developed a submersible called a bathyscaph that made it to the bottom of the Mariana Trench - the deepest point in all the oceans (I think they call it Challenger Deep now for some politically correct reason -g-). 35,800 feet deep. In 1960. Never been repeated, that we know of. The grandfather was named Auguste Piccard. His brother, Jean, taught my Dad engineering in college.
