True, but you are missing something big. Earnings and stock price are tied together by a rather loose rubber band. In the end, stock price ALWAYS reflects fundamentals. In the short term, however, ANYTHING can happen.

So yes, you do need to predict the future. And yes, one indicator of the future is the past.
