I am hoping my local computer store will do what I want relatively inexpensively.

They should be able to install a harddrive in less than an hour. If you just want to replace the drive and copy the entire drive it should still be a basic operation. They can clone the existing drive..there may be problems if the existing drive has bad sectors.

What types of files do you need to back up? Suggest getting your essential data files backed up ASAP.

If you do not want to go inside your computer do not mess around with the old drive. Its days are numbered and if it goes you will have to crack the case to remove it..and possibly reset a jumper on the first drive.
