Steven, I think they have fewer tools with which to deceive, but, being human beings, use, to the best of their ability, those they do have, either to communicate frankly or to deceive, according to which one of the two they suspect is likeliest to achieve their purpose.
I'm generalizing of course. Some of the folk are saints, surely.
I'm wondering if the reason so many people believe the poor to be more nobly honest in their expression is that those who are making the judgement don't know the nuances of the particular language being spoken or have an appreciation of the particular rewards that might acrue to a poor rural person for his or her little verbal deception, or exaggeration, or self dramatization, or self absolution, for example. |
