Since I am not here competing with any discussion of the subject at hand, I take license for furhter wandering.
My interest in food is not limited to the "high cuisine", but to the experience of eating the best of almost any dish.
Let me relate to you the "Best of chili dogs story".
In the mid 70's, I was sent to a logistics course which included trips to various places and two longer courses at an Army Post near Petersburg Virginia. Being the explorer that I am, I spent time touring the battlefields and the countryside and the town. I wandered into the shop of a fine architectural blacksmith there and had many good experinces kicking around. In my wanderings, I happened into a common looking downtown resturant. You know--the kind with a bar and stools on the left, tables down the side and in the middle. Common fare was offered, but of good variety. The waitresses and the employees had been working in the place for mostly a long time and it was owned by a successful couple who seemed to keep it open for their benefit. At any rate, I got to know them and had many meals there. The chili dogs were outstanding and I ask the secret. The owner told me that the smoothness of the chili on the dogs came from the addition of a little lard. The weiners were bought from a koshire house on the east coast. Rather a contradiction in my mind, but I can understand. Still, I must say that theirs is the best chili dog that I ever ate!
There are other stories from that location which are fond in my memory, but which I will not relate publicly.
I am also fond of "lovely sandwich" stories and "the best burger I ever ate".
Surely some here can relate one of those and name the establishment and give me directions!
