I am not an accountant, so I don't know. I'd check with someone who does. This sounds pretty fishy to me. Forgiving a debt is a gift in my opinion.

One possible thing that you might get away with is to have them forgive the interest and principal. But I'd pay that and have them gift it back to you so there is a paper trail that you are paying off the loan. Again...I am not an expert.
