olduvai, welcome back. I am not sure if UMC is planning to get into the 300 mm wafer production (through that Nippon Steel acquisition), but one thing must be clear, the cost of getting into the 300 mm wafers production must exceed $100 MM and then some (it costs WFR more than that I presume), for that kind of a cost they must hope to use at least $100 MM per year of wafers internally, meaning some $1.5 B to $2 billion in end products (assuming wafer costs still to be a minimum of 5% of total selling price of the final dies), I am not sure how rational this is.
