Thanks ed. You capture the essence of why Dell is not just another "box maker." There is no such thing as just box making. R&D into process engineering is largely hidden and does not go onto the balance sheets for comparison by Dan Niles. It has to be integrated into every person's job on the work force. This is very hard to do and if treated as "just another Dilbert management program," will fail. You can't spend money to get these results, it takes motivation and thinking, and Dell has shown it knows how to get the results.

Furthermore, Dell has taken these concepts and included all business processes, not just the manufacturing cell. My point was that this is a sizable $ improvement over its already competition crushing efficiency and is being retrofitted to all older plants.

This is also why Dell can't just take over someone else's factories, they are worthless. Dell also can't assimilate workers like the Borg. It requires continuous training. It is hard for accountants to understand because there are no accounting tools to evaluate this, but it is why Dell is the only stock in my portfolio.
Cheers
Mike
