"Why would T do this?"

T's existing network is TDMA. The popularity of the Digital OneRate plan has sent subs and MOUs soaring. Existing network needs more capacity. Lucent and Ericsson are the incumbent vendors. LU equipment scales better and is truly modular. You can swap out air interfaces very easily - even switch to CDMA if you wanted to - without needing entirely new base stations or switches. It was a no brainer choice for T.
