Rick, do you think it is the CEO's and research staff's egos that prevent this from happening? Your own research idea is always better than someone else's, until it is too late?

I might add that this phenomenon has been the situation in the electronic distribution business for some years. Now there are not many mid-sized firms left, either having merged to become bigger or bought by larger firms. (And there there was not even much incentive in terms of a higher multiple on the large companies; it just made sense from a business point of view.)
