Admiral William Owens, USN-Ret. Is New Director

Adm. William Arthur Owens, US Navy-retired, has been elected to the ViaSat board of directors. Adm. Owens career is distinguished by exceptional achievements in both military and civilian service.
Prior to retiring from the US Navy, Adm. Owens served as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the second highest ranking military office in the United States. His military service also included positions as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet, and senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense. Beginning in 1996 he served as president of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in San Diego. During Owens tenure as president, SAIC acquired Bellcore, which had been the research arm of the regional Bell operating companies. SAIC anticipates 1998 sales of $4.3 billion with 33,000 employees operating in 12 countries. In August, 1998 Owens joined Teledesic LLC as vice chairman of the board, and as CEO of Teledesic Holdings, an investment affiliate. Teledesic is building a global, broadband, satellite-based "Internet-in-the-Sky."
