Merrill Lynch just came out and said that IBM pc division was profitable in 2H98. They believe that IBM is looking at an estimated loss of under $300 million this year for that division. Of course, given IBM's expense allocation process, it's hard to know if that is really as much of a loss as it appears. Interestingly, IBM now receives 1/2 of its profit from software and services unrelated to hardware. 1998 Software and Services combined contributed 65% of the company's pretax income.
