Aol to buy NSM and create web based appliances.

Wishful thinking.

National Semi (owns Cyrix) has the system on a chip that AOL needs to create set top boxes and 'web pad' PDAs.

cyrix.com
cyrix.com

Why did Microsoft buy WebTV? Well, computers are now small and cheap enough that appliances such as the TV and automobile will take on more functionality with an operating system. Everything is going digital (by gov't regulation) and MS is very smart in staying one step ahead. Soon there will be TV based standards. If MS isn't the predominant one, then they will lose out.

National is currently at a near all time low with a mkt cap of just $1.6 billion. I call that a bargain.

More wishful thinking:

AOL to buy COSFF (Corel Corp) and develop a Linux based operating system in conjunction with Netscape. Yes, compete with Microsoft.

Linux + Netscape + WordPerfect Suite = MS Competition

Linux is free. AOL already owns Netscape and Corel Corp is selling for just $150 million (!!!!!). In a nutshell, all the pieces are there to compete with Microsoft, we just need AOL to put them together.

If they put together a complete operating system with a simple user friendly Windows based install, they could offer a "lite" version for free with an upgrade to the deluxe version for whatever they could get out of it (free with an AOL subscription). Imagine the possibilities!

Yet even more wishful thinking:

AOL + COSFF + NSM = Wintel

I can't even begin to fathom the possibilities. But since Wintel are worth close to a trillion dollars (literally...), I think that this may be too good to pass up, especially since NSM and COSFF are at all time lows AS A RESULT OF competing with Wintel.
