First bombs, now: Publisher Drops Monica Book Over Kosovo Reuters - Friday March 26 5:02 PM ET

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Russian publisher of Monica Lewinsky's biography said Friday it had dropped the project because of anti-American fury unleashed by NATO air strikes on Yugoslavia.

''The situation in the Balkans makes it impossible,'' said Anna Sklyaretskaya of publishers Vagrius.

She quoted the company's spokeswoman, Tatyana Makarova, as saying: ''The relationship of people, both to her and to the leadership of her country, has changed. We don't think people will properly accept her.''

Vagrius had said last month it would bring the former White House intern to Russia in the summer for the launch of its translation of her authorized biography, ''Monica's Story''.

Ordinary Russians have shared their government's outrage at the air strikes on Yugoslavia, which President Boris Yeltsin labeled ''naked aggression''.

Crowds of Muscovites have burned American flags in front of the U.S. embassy and splattered the building with ink and eggs.

They can thank Ronald Reagan for that privilege.
