Compaq makes several announcements

Compaq had a busy afternoon as it made several announcements. The company said its Prosignia products are now offered in U.S. retail stores such as CompUSA, Office Depot, OfficeMax and Staples. Targeting small and medium businesses, Compaq's Prosignia is now being delivered through numerous distribution channels, the company said. See press release. Advance Micro Devices (AMD) processors are also configuration choices on Prosignia notebooks.

Compaq also introduced four new Deskpro systems and said it's lowering the price on two models to under $1,000, excluding the monitor. The PCs include Microsoft Windows 95 and Intel 350 MHz Pentium II or 400 MHz Celeron processor. See press release.

In addition, Compaq (CPQ) and Allaire (ALLR) said the companies are in a partnership in which Allaire will provide hardware and software platforms for e-commerce Web applications. The companies said they'll work together to help customers develop Web solutions through Compaq's Proliant servers and Allaire's ColdFusion Web application servers. Allaire creates software for Web development. Shares of the company gained 3 1/2 to 58 1/4, and computer hardware giant Compaq rose 9/16 to 31 13/16 in recent trading. AMD shares were flat at 16.
