These are three good variables which are probably in the top 10.

Variables seem to fluctuate in correlation with future performance.
For example, in a market like we have seen over the last year or so,
very high revenue growth will get good returns. But is this a variable which will perform well over the next 5 years (or the previous 5years)
or is it just that you are getting a lot of Internet stocks which
have become bubble like winners.

Using a large number of variables (like 55, not 5) should insulate one to some extent from being too dependent on variables which may be faddish and not inherently useful long term.
