Leo-
I am an avid laser disc collector and the fact that you have
movie breaks(in the form of flips) is reason alone that i intend to
purchase one. The format is familiar because it looks just like a cd,
that is another reason I will buy one. I have about 1000 laser discs
and they take up alot of storage space. As far as it being beta all
over again, I doubt it very much. You have to understand that there
is a huge vested interest to make this work. A video tape, once you
figure in all the costs runs about $3.50 to reproduce not to mention
the freight and storage costs. Now on the the other side a dvd in large
numbers will cost .80, for a format that never wears out. A laser disc
costs between $6-10.00 to manufacture that is why ld never took off
big in this country, it was never cheap enough. With a retail of about
$25.00 each with plenty of room for discounting that is another reason
I intend to purchase a player(the unit I am buying is a pioneer that
has both ld and dvd capablities) that is not out yet. Yes the picture
is far superior to vhs, but an analogy to the mini disc is probably
more apropriate. There is a format that really never took off(I personally
love the 3 that I have) because of its misperception by the public. Most
people don't even know what md is. Well there was no big reason, besides
the few companies that offer the md format to support a big campaign of
advertisement for this recordable little disc.Other that the
manufacturers there was no one else to lend to the products development
and support. Overall its imortant what you think, not me or anyone else.
So go check one out I think It will give a better opinion on what the future will hold.
regards
aleks
