Herb Greenberg backs down (sort of).
Here's todays entry in his smear campaign. Note the "jab" of comparing CUBE to Iomega (his other great short "project" last summer) in the tag line.

C-CUBE RESPONDS (SORT OF)

A smattering of items:

--Catching up on C-Cube -- again: An item yesterday mentioned that an analyst had slashed his earnings estimates on C-Cube Microsystems. Officials of the Milpitas company didn't return my calls seeking comment. (Actually, they haven't returned my calls for months.)

Anyway, in the name of fairness, let me draw your attention to C-Cube CEO Alex Balkanski's interview yesterday with Reuters. C-Cube makes chips for digital video-disc players. Some critics have been quoted here saying the company's expected growth in that market will be hampered by competition and the DVD's slower-than-expected rollout.

In response, Balkanski told Reuters he expects demand to pick up in the second half of the year, as low-priced DVDs hit the market.

What about increased competition from Fremont-based ESS Technology for chips used in video compact-disc machines? Video compact-disc machines, a distant cousin to the DVD, are sold primarily in Asia. Balkanski's response: C-Cube has retaliated by cutting prices.

Cutting prices? Unless volume goes sharply higher, the critics claim profits will go sharply lower.

(Sick of C-Cube, which rose $1.38 yesterday to close at $27.63? The alternative is Iomega, whose stock has been languishing in the mid-teens since December.)
