In a national survey conducted by Roper Starch for Iomega Corporation, the potential mix-up or deletion of tax records ranked just behind the potential malfunctioning of nuclear power plants in fears Americans expressed over the potential Y2K computer problem.
In the survey, the risks to these important personal and business records were equal to risks of death from biomedical device failure and power blackouts. ''We can't fix the nation's power plants or prevent biomedical devices such as pacemakers from failing,'' said Dr. Jim Taylor, chief marketing officer, Iomega Corporation, ''but we can help relieve the anxiety people are feeling about their important computer files and tax records.''
It's true that computers have made tax filing easier, but they have also increased the anxiety people have about the safety of their tax records. More than half of all Americans (53%) are afraid that a mix-up or a deletion of personal tax records can occur as a result of the Y2K computer problem. ''Publicity about the Y2K problem is increasing consumers' concerns that their important tax records are at risk,'' Dr. Taylor continued.
Here are the top Y2K fears: Top Y2K Fears (percentage saying they are very or somewhat fearful)
1. Malfunctioning of nuclear power plants (54%) 2.- 4. Mix-up or deletion of individual tax records (53%) / Deaths as a result of malfunctioning computerized biomedical devices such as pacemakers (53%) / Blackouts (53%) 5. Bank machine cards not working (52%) 6. Military defense vulnerability (51%) 7. Plane crashes due to instrument failure (50%) 8. Stock market crash (45%) 9 Food shortages (40%) 10. - 11. Oil shortages (39%) / Disruptions at work (39%)
Experts say the best way to protect important computer data is to back it up. Iomega offers Zip® and Jaz® disks and drives to back-up floppy disks, hard drives or any important file.
By using Iomega solutions, taxpayers will be able to easily retrieve their information to amend it, add next year's tax records to the same disks and build an easily accessible tax history file. Each Zip® 100MB disk holds the storage equivalent of 70 floppy disks and now there are even higher-capacity Zip® 250MB drives and disks. Many new computers come with Zip drives built- in; Zip drives and disks are available where computer products are sold.
For those taking Y2K precautions, Iomega's 2GB Jaz drives and disks offer enough capacity to back up an entire operating system. Jaz disks have the capacity to hold tax files for businesses or consolidated records of individual taxpayers.
Survey interviews were conducted via telephone on March 4-7, 1999 among a random sample of 1,005 American adults. The margin or error is plus or minus three percentage points. Roper Starch is one of the nation's largest market research and consulting firms, with headquarters in New York, and offices in Princeton, N.J., Washington, D.C., Dallas, Newport Beach, Calif., London and Hong Kong.
