What is the tip-off to a revolutionary? The clothes? The geography? The job? The companions? The actions? No! These are clues, but it was the attitude...questioning Why and supporting Why Not. Later, after making some answers for oneself, did the vanguard begin to act differently. The younger and rearguard was making similar decisions and improving on the first wave, when "Greetings, The United States Army..."
The era was destroyed. The pieces are fragments, buried, lodged in historical safekeeping and fading memories. You read the Official version of the Nez Pierce campaign. Much happened before they broke camp. Much happened along the way. The Indians were ragtag, so were the hippies, so was Washigton at Valley Forge. Hippies had jobs to support their families. Jobs were scarce for those who took little heirarcical BS. Communes were one. Yet they carried a wide family with little income. Other priorities counted more. Not instead, just more. Other priotities--this was the revolution. And now, the other priorities are eclipsed so badly in the backlash as to disappear.
