Few of the former republics view it as Mother Russia. Who else is a credible candidate? The Baltic States? They want to join NATO! Georgia--- forget it, they will no longer play second fiddle to slavs... The Islamic Republics? Not likely, especially with the prospect of Caspian oil money. Belarus and Ukraine are pretty much it, I think. As for the IMF, it is important, but so is integration into Europe. Too much tension with the United States will derail the ultimate goal of admission to the emerging European Union. being excluded from Europe affects virtually all parties. So, I think that the journalist was exaggerating. OPf course, it is his country, perhaps I am all wet, but he may be too impressed with the pro- Serb sentiment, and thus have inadequate distance, so I am not too shy about offering my views in contrast.
