Aladdin Secures the Global Village against 'Melissa' Virus eSafe - Aladdin's Internet Security product line Provides Immediate Detection and removal of the Melissa Macro Virus - Free solution available at WWW.AKS.COM
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 1999-- Aladdin Knowledge Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ: ALDN - news), a global leader in the field of Internet and software security, today announced that computer users worldwide using award-winning eSafe Internet Security products are protected against the rampant 'Melissa' macro virus. The 'Melissa' macro virus effects users of Microsoft Corporations Outlook/Exchange messaging software by automatically replicating infected documents throughout corporate and Internet-based email systems.
Shimon Gruper, Chief Technology Officer for Aladdin's Internet Security Unit, said, ''The Melissa macro virus is a new type of Internet virus that replicates itself, thus assuring its ongoing survival throughout email systems worldwide. We at Aladdin have released updates to our virus tables on Sunday 3/28 that contain the ability to detect and kill the Melissa macro virus. This is a new paradigm in virus/vandal writings using the Internet as a tool for fast replication, unlike regular macro viruses that simply infect other documents. This is another example of how malicious programs can ''hi-jack'' Internet applications to perform malicious acts. The eSafe product was designed to protect against such threats, and not just regular viruses. Also, the patented Sandbox technology we have integrated into all our eSafe products slowed the replication of the virus, even before we had these updates available, through isolating the incoming macro and denying it access to system resources, in this case the user's address book. Our ''Sandbox'' essentially quarantines hostile code, including most macro viruses, and thereby protects user files from invasion.''
Aladdin is offering free downloads of its award winning product eSafe Protect Desktop to users concerned about the Melissa virus or any other potential threats on the Internet at www.AKS.com. Aladdin is dedicated to providing solutions to corporations and home users so everyone from the CEO to the student can use the Internet for all the benefits the Internet offers without risks such as ''Melissa''.
The Melissa macro virus, which originated in Western Europe, has wreaked havoc with corporate and personal e-mail as it started to speed across the Internet on Friday, March 28, 1999. 'Melissa' is taking down corporate email servers by propagating via e-mail faster than they can handle. Attached to the e-mail is a Word file that, if opened, launches a macro that replicates a message to the first 50 names in the recipient's Outlook address book. The subject line reads: ''important message from,'' followed by a user name. The body consists of a text message that says, ''Here is that document you asked for... don't show anyone else;-).'' The virus uses Outlook specifically to dramatically increase its infection rates, but people using e-mail software other than Outlook may be able to spread infected files by sending them to other users of Microsoft Word. Anyone who uses Microsoft Word '97 or the beta of Word 2000 can be infected, as Outlook is not necessary for the virus to spread, it is only makes the epidemic spread faster. The threat of the Melissa macro virus is so great Microsoft cut off its entire enterprise from Internet email access Friday afternoon.
