I don't think that AOL will have idle 56K modems anytime soon. The traffic from customers with ADSL will come in to AOL on a glass fiber line running ATM. A ADSL connection can't go further than a few miles. Therefore either AOL deploys ADSL everywhere or ADSL people will choose other local providers for their primary net access. It could of course end up with the RBOCs providing the network connection and AOL providing internet service. But anyway there will still be millions of customers left with old analog modems. According to forecasts people will even continue to buy new analog modems for several years.

The TI Cx6 chip is brand new and just now begins to ship to interested manufacturers.
