Osprey, not to drag this out, especially since I'm not a tech person. Just checking back on the threads periodically, so don't know if you mentioned this. I think you said you're using Win '98 - wondering if time of install had any impact and if initial start up problems might be attributable to DLL file problems. Maybe the new Cdn/Us java ticker uses newer files that Win'98 doesn't like? Other people using Win'98 OK and does time of install impact it?
"some applications fail under Windows 98 because they rely on newer Microsoft dynamic link libraries (DLLs), which have been replaced by older versions during Windows 98's installation. The culprit here is Windows 98's new Version Conflict Manager (VCM). He explains: "If you look at the Windows 95 days, if you didn't have the right driver you'd freeze up. With Win 98, you keep running."
Still, this approach is far from perfect. VCM does not tell you what it has done, so applications requiring newer files can have fits without warning. In this event, you can replace the older, freshly installed DLL with the newer uninstalled model. Fortunately, VCM moves the file to a location where it can be retrieved by the Microsoft System Information accessory using a new and obscure VCM applet. This applet is found under Programs/Accessories/ System Tools/System Information/ Tools/Version Conflict Manager.
With this utility, you'll find the list of files that have been moved by the Windows 98 installation process. Unless you know they are there, though, you'll never find the missing files."
