It doesn't matter what application the virus is targeted to. As long as an application support programmability, it is vulnerable to this type of attack. In Word/Excel, it is just VBA scripts. I don't know much of Java, I think if you can create an email with an attachment that would run some Java script, it would have a similar effect. Hackers always target the most popular apps or OS. Like I said before, if everyone is a little bit careful, he/she should be OK. You shouldn't enable macro unless you really sure what you are doing.
