The implication of the article is that there is currently a MINIMUM of $50-$70 million in previously contracted military procurement orders over the next five years for airborne display systems. I say minimum because the article points out that this was the backlog of OIS, the company that shuttered its doors last year, and doesn't count dpiX's backlog at that time. As a startup dpiX was shipping $10 million in product in 1998 and was just beginning volume production. (Note: It also lost $15 million last year.)

This minimum also doesn't include the demand for the displays from the medical community.

In essence, every order is a potential sale for Microvision's VRD if they can bring it to market quickly and Xerox shuts down dpiX rather than sells it. Note the paragraph describing the aspect ratio requirement which makes it hard for many display systems to meet military display standards. We already KNOW that VRD meets this standard since it has been accepted by both the Army and the Navy!

If I were the Director of Business Development at MVIS, I would be seizing this opportunity to get in the door of all of the customers of dpiX (and former customers of OIS), to show them how Microvision's VRD can meet their needs for display systems. We need to convert these potential sales into MVIS customers while they are panicking that they won't have a supplier for their critical display subsystems. We already have the attention of Boeing. We can use Boeing's credibility as well as our current military contracts as leverage to at least get an opportunity to get in front of the decision-makers at these companies. At worst, MVIS gains higher visibility in the marketplace.
