I don't know where he went but I think I know where he came from

Look at the email below from a colleague of mine. He was tapped by Microsoft to be one of their online boosters.
Microsoft PAYS people (with products, discounts etc) to do this.

Robert:
My name is Phil Petrocelli, and I am one of the Developer MVP Leads for Internet/Components Support. What this means is that I am a contact for all the MVPs for Microsoft Visual J++ support. I am writing to you because someone suggested you as a candidate after reading some of your posts on various Usenet or Microsoft-sponsored newsgroups.
What is an MVP? MVP stands for "Most Valuable Professional". The Microsoft MVP Program is designed to promote the development of large, healthy, thriving peer communities of Microsoft product users -- primarily by recognizing exceptional members of the community for their unselfish work in sharing their knowledge and experience about our products with others -- especially via various online services such as our Internet newsgroups, on The Microsoft Network, or on CIS. We do this by providing information -- in the form of kits, products, and documentation, as well as by helping to defray the cost of staying "connected" to the community. We also invest in an ongoing relationship between an MVP and the corresponding Microsoft product support team.
Microsoft provides a "JumpStart" kit to help us to get to know each other better. What this does is to help "connect" you -- both to Microsoft and to an active community (if you are not already connected!). The kit itself contains several CD's with lots of useful information to help you as you help others. We also offer 4 months of complimentary connect time for your existing account on The Microsoft Network (if appropriate) to make it easier to stay in touch.
What this allows us to do is to "try out" the relationship to see how it works and feels. At the end of the trial period (usually about 4 months or so) the Visual J++ MVP's and Sysops will review your participation in the community and, based on their recommendations (and how YOU feel about it!), we will either offer you an MVP award, renew your Jumpstart status, or discontinue the process.
"So how do I get started?" you might be saying. Well, if you are interested in helping others, have access to the Internet or to an online service such as The Microsoft Network or CIS, we can "JumpStart" you right away! We need the following information* to begin:
* This information will not be used for anything besides the MVP program.
Full Name: MSN or Compuserve ID: Internet Email Address: Newsgroups or Forums You'll Participate In: Company Name (optional): Mailing Address (Street): Mailing Address (City, State, Zip): Primary Phone: Secondary Phone: Fax: Special Instructions:
What electronic platforms do you use? (MSN, AOL, Internet, etc.)
What Microsoft products do you use?
What areas, technologies or languages do you specialize in? (C,C++,ODBC,OLE, VB, etc.)
Once we receive this information, we'll be sending you a JumpStart kit within a couple of weeks. If you have any questions about the MVP program, feel free to email me directly (philpet@microsoft.com).
Thank you for your interest in the MVP Program and for using Microsoft products!
Regards,
Phil Petrocelli Microsoft Technical Support Internet/Components Development Team MVP Program
