Tests Confirm Full Compatibility of Panasonic DVD-RAM Drive and NovaDisk Back-Up/Recovery Software

March 30, 1999 07:45

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 1999--Panasonic Industrial Company joined with NovaStor Corporation today in announcing that their tests confirm the compatibility of Panasonic's LF-D101 DVD-RAM drive and NovaStor's NovaDisk backup/recovery software for Windows(R) 95 and NT environments.

Combined, the rewriteable DVD drive and robust software offer powerful features that work together to make backup, data management and disaster recovery easier and more economical.

With NovaDisk's advanced data compression capabilities, desktop, laptop, and network users can double the capacity of a 2.6GB DVD-RAM disc to achieve 5.2GB of backup storage on a single side for only .004 cents/MB. When used with NovaDisk's unattended scheduler, the DVD-RAM drive's high-capacity discs also eliminate the need to have someone on-hand to load new discs as the old ones are filled. A single disc can store about 1.3 million pages of text, 150 minutes of high-quality MPEG-2 video, more than 8 hours of AC3 audio or 5,200 full-color photos (640x480).

"The Panasonic DVD-RAM drive was designed to meet today's burgeoning storage requirements, and cost effective, high-capacity storage is one of the most important elements of a backup solution," said Peter Means, president of NovaStor. "With NovaDisk and the LF-D101," he continued, "users have the capacity and the tools they need to carry out regularly scheduled backups that won't interfere with their work."

In addition to offering high capacity, DVD-RAM media provides a million overwrites and a data life of more than 30 years. Inherently rugged and reliable, the removable discs have an address error rate of less than 10(-23).

More than a backup solution, NovaDisk comes complete with the latest in virus scanning options and includes encryption for secure, private backups. To assist Windows 95 users in restoring their operating system following a disaster, the package includes NovaBoot, a program that creates a boot disk(s) with everything users need to restore complete volumes. With a 120ms average seek time, a synchronous data transfer rate of up to 10.5Mbps, and a 2MB buffer, the Panasonic LF-D101 drive speeds the recovery of data files.

"NovaStor puts all of its products through thousands of hours of 'real world' testing to ensure that they're the best in their class," noted Jeff Saake, Group General Manager, Panasonic Industrial Co., Computer Technology Group. "With the additional testing that was carried out to ensure the compatibility of our DVD-RAM drive and NovaDisk software, businesses and individuals can be confident that they'll have a backup solution that is reliable, cost-effective and easy to use."

Fully compliant with the DVD Forum DVD-RAM standards, the LF-D101 drive can also be used to read from discs currently accepted by CD-ROM, CD Audio, CD-R, CD-RW and video CD drives, as well as DVD-ROM, DVD video, and DVD-R drives.
