Compaq's Products, Program
Target Small Biz
(03/29/99, 5:08 p.m. ET)
By Eric Hausman , Computer Reseller News

Compaq president and CEO Eckhard
Pfeiffer said Compaq's newest program will
let resellers sell its latest products as
efficiently as the direct vendors.

In a news conference Monday morning in which
Compaq revealed plans to expand its Customer Choice
program and unveiled new additions to the Prosignia
product line, Pfeiffer said Compaq provides more
choice for customers than any other competitor in the
small- and midsized-business market.

Pfeiffer said the new model will improve efficiencies and
greatly reduce cycle times and inventory in the channel.

"Authorized resellers can deliver the latest technology as
efficiently as any direct manufacturer," Pfeiffer said.
Compaq is touting the new channel program as an
"inventory-less distribution model."

Under the PartnerDirect program, resellers can
purchase configured-to-order products, along with
third-party parts, and have the full system shipped
directly to their location or customer, Pfeiffer said.

Tech Data and Ingram Micro are initial distributors that
will participate as part of a co-location program.

The idea, Pfeiffer said is, "reducing cycle times and
eliminating channel inventory."

Houston-based Compaq was expected to formally
announce the new program Tuesday, but moved that up
one day because of the anticipation and other conflicts,
according to the company.

Pfeiffer said Compaq also is rolling out "customized
extranets" for corporate customers. He said those
extranets will increase "dramatically" in the near future.

Pfeiffer said Compaq is shipping $2 million a day
through its Direct Plus program, shipping product to
customers in less than five business days for each order.

Good Day
