Paul, RE: As you know Intel is supporting Linux. Has your company considered using AMD or INTC processors with Linux versus using Solaris? Everyone in the semi biz has considered this option, the problem is the applications don't exist. Some software is written in house over years and can be ported, but the bulk of the commercial stuff Cadence, Quad, ModelSim, etc have not been released for x86 processors running Solaris or Linux. Keep in mind the dominant platforms are Solaris for Sparc and HPUX for HP workstations. One thing that also may have been missed by most AMD fans, is that HPUX will run on the upcomming Merced - it's not a port like Solaris x86, it's the current running version of HP-UX on PA-RISC processors. So this means the Merced will create lower cost workstations with a large collection of commercial design tools that are already in use today. This will be a very simple IT choice, no porting, just buy the box and all your current stuff runs. The same cannot be said for any variant of the AMD line of processors.
