A friend of mine who grew up in Ossining had family in the north Bronx, not far from Gunhill Road. Sometimes, when I visited, we would go there, on the way to Manhattan, parking near his aunt's and using the subway, really an elevated train through most of the Bronx. The neighborhood was predominantly Italian, with old- fashioned butcher shops and marvelous bakeries. One of the things I most love about New York is that kind of diverse mix of neighborhoods... By the way, I used to play chess some in college, although I never was interested enough to crack a book, which is required to get good at it. However, I played for a while with a guy who had been a high- school champ, and got good enough that he could only beat me through an excess of pawns in the end game, and I could even draw him from time to time. I think I only won outright once... |
