Think of the sale of the call and the purchase of the stock as occurring simultaneously.

I tried that in July 98 timeframe (I think). I bought Dell and Rmbs and immediately sold covered calls for a good premium. Both stocks shot up, got called, and I made a nice profit (but had to watch both stocks nearly double without me). Okay I did it again the next month, got a premium and the stocks promptly went down more points than the premium (More even than the profit from the previous month). I know I have a lousy sense of timing.

Does this strategy work best if you think the underlying issue is going up in price? down? or best in a choppy environment? I've been a very lucky person, but I could be retired on my own island if I hadn't missed a lot of opportunities ( I suppose that is true of most of us).
