antitrades: your post brings up an interesting point, IMHO, regarding the hype and media associated with MSFT. I have been thinking about this for some time. The media blitz and hype associated with MSFT products IMHO has been excessive. The entire idolization of Gates wealth and his being placed in the position of an American hero, idol, etc. Why is this continuing to become more and more pervasive? Two things come to mind: 1) much of the government, including IRS and DOD, stake their mission critical applications and networking on Unix. Why, because they know the quality is unsurpassed. The media and gov't are in synch. now more than any other point in America's history. Due to these mission critical applications would it not be advantageous, for security reasons, to not have the masses hacking away and learning on Unix but thrashing around and having API's changed at will on poor quality non-standard MSFT product? Far out, maybe, but IMO not out of the question. 2) Gate$, for some reason which does not have anything to do with getting a great return on MSFT's money, has been rumored to have placed a huge chunk of MSFT's cash in treasury bills. Would it not be an interesting marriage, MSFT, the Fed, and the media pushing poor quality product on the American public for money, security, and the keep them dumb syndrome. Far out, maybe, and I am not prone to conspiracy plot scenarios. But I just can not understand why technologies that have been developed, standardized, proven, and deployed by Unix are being pushed as new exciting features for NT and MSFT. Enough of my rantings. Any thoughts? |
