I am a libertarian in that I believe in the Bill of Rights as issued. I am a liberal in that I see the same real value in government as your marvelous post laid out. I'm a "gun-toting liberal". :-)

This country was made great by allowing the poor and immigrant classes entry into the middle class. Agreed. There is a new and pernicious movement afoot to provide such a support net to the poor that the goad of failure would be blunted. The old contract was "if you work hard enough, you get a crack at the American Dream". I see a new contract emerging - one of compassion for the poor - whether by unfortunate circumstance or by disinclination. I would like to see the disinclined or merely unlucky person's right to fail left intact. The disabled will need Gov't support, and somehow, I don't know how, we need to keep most of the hopelessly lazy out of that support system.
