Don,

The talk about using AER Energy batteries for powering cars is indicative of the lack of basic research done on this company. Anyone looking at the company's literature will notice that they started out trying to make batteries for electric cars and failed miserably. AER Energy was founded trying to find alternative uses for the Zinc-Air technology.

After talking to AER engineers, it is quite apparent that there technology is much more limited than most people realize. The Zinc-Air technology gives out power at an even, steady rate. It does not give out peaks of power very well. That is why they aren't used for electric cars. I asked about using the batteries for hand-held cordless tools. I was told that their batteries would not work because of the peak power issue and because zinc-air batteries are bulky by nature. The bulk comes from the fact that zinc-air batteries need to be exposed to air (over a large surface area) to work.

Of course, the major limit to Zinc-Air technology is the number of charging cycles. Until this problem is resolved, there will be no OEM agreements for AERN. They were supposed to roll out their all-purpose PowerSlice about a year ago, and still have released it as far as I know. This battery was supposed to work with almost all notebooks, not just HP's and Toshiba's. This company is very bad about hitting deadlines. When they say they are at least a year away from an OEM agreement, figure two or three years. Why people thought there would be some big announcement at the shareholder meeting is beyond me.

You seem to be very well informed about AERN, therefore I am quite surprised you did not realize that AER batteries don't work in electric cars. Many people follow what you say about AERN, since you are a very enthusiastic supporter of the company. While I somewhat share your enthusiasm, I feel that everyone posting on this board should do some more research. I prefer to invest more on fact than on hype or rumor.
