You've got the nature of the game right but there are plenty of investors more than willing to pay up front for Amazon's dream - they were able to get over $1.4 billion in debt. With that who needs a bank?

If you think Amazon trades on earnings, then you need all the luck in the world. Yes, eventually all stocks trade on earnings, but that could be several years from now before Amazon does. As long as sales grow at a similar rapid pace that AMZN has seen, then the stock isn't going to falter more than a technical correction, IMO. Moves like this auction site will help to keep sales growth moving upward. Forget that Amazon will only make a few percent gross margin on the business that goes past their site, the expectation of a larger gross number has already added to the furry.
