Intel/CPQ: The other day I re-posted a reference by she_x about some snippets she had heard in Houston about Intel making COMPAQ boxes. Following up on this, I have been told by someone knowledgeable about COMPAQ, that the reference might have been to the forthcoming 8-way (8 CPU) Pentium III XEON Servers. Apparently, CPQ has been involved for a long time with a company called Corollary and assisted it in the development of SMP chipsets. I understand that the 8-way servers are going to be based on a chipset / architecture called "Profusion". The chipset will actually be labelled "Compaq" and all vendors/manufacturers wanting 8-way products will have to pay royalties to Compaq for each machine produced. It would be good if they were forced to put "Compaq Inside".

Intel bought Corollary a while back. The royalties to COMPAQ derived, in this way, from competitors, will help lower the cost of the machines and increase margins.
