I asked US West for DSL. They came and installed a dedicated copper line. They then told me that I couldn't use their DSL because I was over 12000 feet from the CO and testing of the line showed it wouldn't work. Many of these lines were installed in 1950 s and are not only some distance from the CO but also not in the best of shape. So if this is still the case many of us have no choice but to go with cable modems when they are available .
