The company has been awarded a significant grant under the National
Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP). The IRAP
grant will support the company's R&D to advance the company's electronic
shelf labeling product. This relationship in the short and long term will
allow the company to receive substantial grants towards R&D in addition to
obtaining access to world renowned experts and facilities.
The company will be working in conjunction with the Communications Research
Centre (CRC) on enhancements designed to sustain the company's market
leadership in the electronic shelf labeling industry. The CRC with over 200
engineers and scientists and state of the art laboratory facilities
conducts leading edge R&D in key areas of specific application to the
company including wireless communication, antenna technologies, microwave
and digital integrated circuits and new semi-conductor materials. The CRC
is recognized as the leader in all forms of radio frequency communications.
The CRC has collaborative agreements with world renowned research
institutes including NATO, CNET in France, ETRJ in Korea and CRL in Japan
and arrangements with over two dozen research organizations in North
America, Europe and Asia to keep abreast of the latest developments in
communications. These alliances are of particular interest to the company
as it has significant operations in the US and in Europe.
Further to the announcement of January 30 1997 (Stockwatch, January 31),
the company has now signed a definitive contract with The Stop & Shop
Supermarket Company to install the company's electronic shelf labels in 33
of its Connecticut locations this year.
