M$ doesn't HAVE to compete with sun but as long as they are in
the OS business they do. I agree with you that M$ can be a great
help to Sun but as long as

1. M$ writes to Windows
2. Sun runs Unix
3. Unix and Windows are not compatible

then M$ does compete with Sun.

In an ideal world where the Java platform is the great equalizer
then M$ writes Java Code for EVERY hardware platform and Sun is
just one of those platforms then you would be correct but untill
M$ gives up thier Windoze or Sun gives up thier Unix then I feel
there is competition.

I don't see HP, DEC and IBM as being any more of a threat than
the Wintell group, and you have to put them all together to form
that threat. When you have Intel, M$ and Compaq trying to deliver
the same solution as Sun then that to me is the competion.

The only reason M$ is talked down so much is that unlike Intel,
Compaq and others they don't like to compete on a level field.

Just one Humble Opinion
