You make excellent points and I agree with virtually all of them, including:

"But US cellular market has not shown appetite for data services like in Europe and Japan. So, I don't really see this as likely in the next few years."

Despite that, (and more seriously Omnipoint's lack of capital) I think that Omnipoint more than any other US PCS operator, has expressed more interest in pursuing wireless data initiatives than any other "cellular" operator from the time they (attempted to) launch the Big Apple.
