Like readers from many NATO countries or I think the Presidency suffers Clinton.
And like many other readers, from many other nations, I have a different political landscape to deal with on a daily basis. The characterization of all NATO leaders as puppets, given the seriousness of the situation everyone is facing, is certainly shallow. I watched Lloyd Axworthy last night on the news and the only thought that came to my mind was that he was a consummate politician. He is Canada's Defense Minister. His answers were vague, even for a Liberal, but I did get a strong sense of resolve. The efforts of International groups have highlighted the the Kosovo situation like never before in history. The political will is there, look at the Russian delegation and the cause they carried to Belgrade. It is only a matter of time, this is of course my opinion. The situation develops and even a mediocre tactician could get this far, NATO has the best tacticians. Canadian politicians are no better than Americans, but they are Canadian, this holds true in most of the world. Americans who are against this action would rather focus on the foibles of Bill Clinton, rather than the gravity of this international action. NATO leaders are not trying to win a popularity contest, obviously. |
