I think the only capital gains are if there is a change in the makeup of the trust (e.g., a company leaves the Nasdaq 100 because it's bought out or moves to the NYSE).

As with index funds, capital gains distributions should be very small. This is more like buying a very diversified growth stock that doesn't pay dividends. You can trade it or sell it years down the line, with almost all the gains being deferred as long-term capital gains...
