SLI is ramping up to produce high power semiconductor laser diodes (SLDs). In layman's terms (forgive me if you know this already), SLDs are sort of like computer chips that emit light - the most common example is the little laser that "reads" your CDs. That, however, is not the market that that SLI is pursuing. They are going after higher power applications, such as cutting, welding, and acting as the ignition switch for even bigger lasers. But before you start thinking about "Star Wars" style blasters, you should know that "high power" in this field can be 1-2 watts.

As for their financial situation - they are strictly developmental stage, with no revenues to speak of. Their press releases indicate that they are getting close to swinging into volume production, but I have no information about how many orders they are or will be getting.
