I see these kind of statements a lot in the context that this is like the other conflicts, and I don't get it... (not necessarily you, BTW)

How many other conflicts are as likely to destabilize the world? The Congo? This area already started at least one world war.

My guess is the US knows this thing is about to spread anyway, and this is the only chance to stop it. A no win situation....as usual.
